The various types of smoke damage:
  • Wet smoke damage – This is usually low heat, smoulders and may have a pungent odor.
  • Dry smoke damage – Results due to a fast burning fire at high temperatures, synthetic soot will be very black in colour, wood or natural products grey to light black.
  • Protein smoke damage – This can tarnish and discolour paints and varnishes. Residue may be greasy and yellow or brown in colour with a pungent odour.
  • Fuel oil soot – Very dark soot, usually caused by puff backs or blockages to the exhaust, may be released in significant quantities.
  • Other types of soot damage – These may include tear gas, fingerprint power and CO2 fire extinguisher residue.
Potential risks to your health:
  • Heat Damage – This is thermal damage to the body's tissues, the respiratory tract is especially vulnerable to high air intake temperatures. Heat damage can occur to the mucus linings of the nose and mouth if unprotected.
  • Asphyxiation – Most health damage and deaths result from inhalation of toxic smoke. The smoke may physically block the fine airways in the lungs, or where this smoke is especially toxic, will reduce the ability of the blood to deliver oxygen to the body's tissues and organs. This may result in organ damage or failure, unconsciousness and death.
  • Lung irritation – Smoke particles contain many chemicals and even standing in a room after the fire has been extinguished without respiratory protection can result in these particles getting into the lungs causing irritation. If you suffer from coughing/shortness of breath/sore throat/headache or confusion following inhalation of smoke contact a doctor immediately.
